Emily Hewlett (Hampton) Williams
Emily Hewlett (Hampton) Williams, formerly of Fort Sumner, passed away at 89 years of age on October 21, 2021, in Poulsbo, Washington. She was born at home on November 11, 1931, in St Petersburg, Florida, the youngest daughter of A.W. and Priscilla Hampton. Emily was married for 50years to Robert Williams, who predeceased her in 2017. She was also preceded in death by 4 brothers; Gus, George, Archie, Ben and her sister, Priscilla.
Emily graduated with a B.A. in Education from the University of Florida in 1954. Her 25-year teaching career began at Mount Vernon Elementary School in St. Petersburg and concluded in 1989 after teaching 15 years in Fort Sumner. She had a particular interest in early childhood and special needs education. Emily was a life-long learner; while in Fort Sumner she spent many nights traveling to Eastern New Mexico University for graduate-level education courses. After retiring and moving to Virginia she frequently enrolled in courses at the local adult learning center.
In addition to having a passion for teaching, Emily was an avid potter. She had her own kiln and produced many fine pieces of jewelry and dishes which she sold at craft shows or gave away to friends.
Emily was a member of the National Education Association and a volunteer for both the Girl and Boy Scouts. In addition, she served on the Albuquerque Mental Health Association Board of Directors and was an Auxiliary Volunteer at Sandia Psychiatric Hospital.
Emily is survived by three children: Leslie (Patrick) Stapleton, Poulsbo, WA; Chip Aydelott, Denver, CO; and Beth (Tim) Delaney, Norfolk, VA. She is also survived by 9 grandchildren and 6 great-grandchildren. She will be interred beside her husband, Bob, in Broken Arrow, Oklahoma.
