Cornelia Fidelia Vigil Grooms
Cornelia Fidelia Vigil Grooms, affectionately known as “Phoebe” passed away on February18, 2026, at White Sands Nursing Home in Hobbs, New Mexico. Born on December 5, 1935, in El Corazon, New Mexico, she lived a life marked by love, kindness, and a deep connection to her family and community.
Phoebe dedicated many years to working as a server in the food service industry, where her warm smile and genuine care for others made her a beloved figure among patrons and colleagues alike. She was a cherished parishioner at St. Anne’s Catholic Church, where she found solace and strength in her faith.
Described as a very loving and giving individual, Phoebe enjoyed visiting with people, always uplifting those around her with her joyful spirit. Her hobbies included crocheting, sewing, baking, and creating delicious pies that delighted friends and family. Additionally, she had a passion for crafting crosses and jewelry, which served as meaningful tokens of her creativity. Phoebe also took great pride in her yard, nurturing her roses and creating a beautiful space for all to enjoy.
Phoebe is survived by her two sons, Johnny Quintana and Claude Gene Quintana, both of Tucumcari; her siblings, Virginia Campos and Elizabeth (Larry) Apodaca, both of Santa Rosa, Bertha Barrett of Chapmanville, West Virginia, and Patrick Vigil of Alamogordo. She is also survived by her sister-in-law, Cathy Vigil of Fort Sumner; several grandchildren; and numerous nephews, nieces, family, and friends who will fondly remember her warmth and generosity.
She is preceded in death by her parents, Agapito Vigil and Dorotea (Benavidez) Vigil; her first husband, Claude Quintana; her second husband, A.G. Grooms; and her siblings, Rudy G. Vigil, Raymond Vigil, Steve Vigil, Tito Vigil, Joe Gomez, Enriquita Marquez, Evangelina Quintana, and Lydia Gomez, her sister-in-law, Delia Vigil; brother-in-law, Mayo Campos; and niece, Sandra Vigil.
Visitation will be Friday, February 27, 2026 beginning at 10 a.m. at St. Anne’s Catholic Church in Tucumcari.
The funeral Mass will begin at 11 a.m. on Friday, February 27, 2026 at St. Anne’s , with Father Sotero Sena celebrating the service.
Interment will follow at Tucumcari Memorial Park.
