John Malcolm Greer
John Malcolm “Johnny” Greer, born September 10, 1929, to Claudia Lorena Netterville Greer and Paul Elijah Greer of Baton Rouge, Louisiana. He passed away on Monday, June 7, 2021, at the family home in Centreville, Mississippi.
Survivors include loving and devoted wife, Anna Carroll Darden Greer, of 62 years of marriage; children Dorie Ann Greer Tucker (Roy Dale), Johna Kay Greer Pyron (John Carl) and Thomas Malcolm Greer (Amy Renee Bell), eight grandchildren and two great grandsons, a host of extended family, friends, and acquaintances.
John is preceded in death by his parents; sister Mary Marjory Persick; brothers Thomas Burton “Tommy” Greer, Jasper Oswell “Duck” Greer, Wallace LaRue Greer, and Paul Elwood Greer; stepsisters, Maybelle Greer Keller, Irma Greer Clark and Willie Mae Greer Ware.
John graduated with the 1951 senior class at Istrouma High School, Baton Rouge, LA and soon after enlisted in the United States Naval Reserves where he received a certificate as Pipe Fitter Third Class. He also served on the USS Menifee during the Korean War and was honorably discharged January 1957. He was honored with the Korean Service Ribbon, United Nations Service Medal, and China Service Medal during that time.
John worked as a Welder/Mill Wright/Mechanic at the Georgia Pacific Corporation retiring after a 33-year career there. His time was fully devoted to the family place where he enjoyed farming and ranching.
He was an active member of the Centreville United Methodist Church and the Miss Rodeo America organization with his devoted wife Ann by his side.
Visitation was held Thursday, June 10, 2021, at Centreville United Methodist Church from 10 a.m. until time of service at 11:30 a.m. with Dr. Dennis Johnsey and Rev. Chelsae Knight officiating. Interment followed at Oaklawn Cemetery under the direction of Newman Funeral Home.
Pallbearers included Thomas Haze Greer, Latham Townsend Pyron, John Colter Pyron, Edward James “Jake” Cowen III, Cody Monroe Brister, and Alex Ray Nicholson.
Honorary Pall Bearers included Jewel Jack “Bucky” Darden, Jewell Jack “Jake” Darden Jr., Matthew Mays “Matt” Darden, Steven Edgar “Steve” Brady, Darden Brady, James Dan Dalton, Dr. David Burnell McGraw, Dr. Patrick Wade Larkin, Wayne A. Triche, William Marvin “Bill” Bankston, and Joe E. Brian.
